How to get more light and space in the attick

Do you feel squeezed in the attic and seeking more room and brightness?

This is an option from Velux (image above), but other companies (like Fakro) can also deliver this special skylight. Often, no permit is required! The windows must be placed at least 60 cm from the border with the neighbors and at least 50 cm below the roofline. This is truly another way to add space to a room.

How to get started?

First of all, go to this website: Vergunningcheck – Omgevingsloket (overheid.nl) and check if there are restrictions for your home.

Then, contact your local contractor, or get in touch with mine, and mention that you want this extension. They will need to check if there is enough space to access with a trailer and crane, and verify if there are any tubes or wires that need to be relocated. After that, the roof construction will have to be adjusted to ensure the strength of your roof. We can provide a construction engineer to find out what is possible.

After agreeing on costs, delivery time, and construction, this is what it will look like inside:

Why is this skylight often exempt from permission requirements?

As you can see, this extension is smaller than a roof dormer, which is why a permit is often not necessary.

Is there an alternative way to create space and light in the attic?

If the roof structure is delicate or requires extensive rewiring, consider this balcony, which can be fully enclosed:

The photos above were taken during my visit to the Eigen Huis exhibition in Utrecht, presented by the company ‘Dakvenster’ in Breukelen. They can deliver and install these roof windows. You can also contact your local contractor for more information, or reach out to our corporate contractor.
